On 19 September 2022, a conference - Personal
Data Protection in the Digital Age was held. The conference was organized by ISOC Georgia and moderated by Ketevan Kukava
- the Director of “Law and Public Policy Center” and the Head of the
Personal Data Protection Special Interest Group at Internet Society
Georgia Chapter.
Speakers of the conference were
students of Georgian higher educational institutions. They discussed challenges
related to data protection with regard to the
following issues: social networks, e-commerce, electronic communications,
freedom of expression, remote labor relations, etc. Special attention was paid
to the European standards of data protection, the case law of the ECtHR and the
CJEU.
“Technological progress has brought significant benefits to
society, improved the quality of life, and created new opportunities; however,
at the same time, it posed new threats to the right to privacy and created
risks in terms of personal data protection. Technological development has an
impact on all aspects of people’s everyday life. Despite
many benefits, the digital age created certain challenges, as a high volume of
information is being collected, which is processed in more and more complex
ways. That’s why our project aimed to assess and analyze the risks that emerge in the digital age,
and see how the European data protection law develops and against this background, what challenges exist in Georgia,” - noted Ketevan Kukava.
Topics discussed at the conference
confirmed the significance of personal data protection in the digital age and the
multifaceted risks
and threats that exist in this regard.
